Community Outreach Programs

Community Outreach is integral to the work of Barrios Unidos. Our outreach activities have earned the respect and trust of a wide segmennt of the community including youth, educators, law enforcement officials, and parents.Barrios Unidos staff members are called upon to provide their expertise and support in public schools, juvenile halls, prisons, and local communities, as well as communities throughout the nation and numerous organizations both nationally and internationally.


Kids Clubs provide children ages 5-18 with a safe, positive learning environment with a multi-cultural focus.

Youth Groups: Opportunities for positive enhancement/change in individuals who are at risk of the negative impact of violence in their neighborhood. Youth gather for BBQ's, movies, beach bonfires, and open mic nights where youth can showcase their poetry, music, dance, and other creative talents in a fun and safe environment.

Parents Groups empower families by educating and informing them about resources that are available in their communities. Eliminates barriers created by language, racial, and economic obstacles by providing multi-cultural perspectives and individual support.


MAA: Provides Medi-Cal insurance outreach to individuals and families; information and assistance with the application process, referrals for physical, emotional, and mental services and family planning.


High School Mentoring enhances motivation of young men and women through individual mentors and facilitation of groups with an emphasis on instilling positive self-image, increasing self-esteem through cultural identity and traditions, and building strong communication skills. Provides opportunities for youth to build leadership skills and participate in enhancing their community through volunteer participation in community events and service within a local non-profit.

Juvenile Hall is a multi-cultural bilingual program that focuses on indigenous traditions and teachings, gender specific issues, youth awareness, and cultural events. Individual "check-ins" are one of the major components of the program that strengthens connections between staff and incarcerated youth. We use group workshops as a community building practice. The staff of Barrios Unidos not only work with the kids, but also help bring healing into the lives of the youth and families we serve.

Street Outreach offers alternative activities to youth who are at risk of violence, including free expression through art, rap, dance, and poetry. The program fosters pride, understanding, respect, and tolerance within the community.


Cultural Programs refer to the organization of events that welcome diversity and honor community and cultural rituals. Some past events include Jazz Nights, Latin Rhythm Nights, Dia de Los Muertos Celebration, Cesar Chavez Community Service Day, Classics for Peace car calendar, and Indigenous Recognition Day at Alcatraz Island.
