Last Thursday Santa Cruz Barrios Unidos took the Pelican Bay prison cell replica to Pajaro Valley High School in Watsonville, as part of its "Education Not Incarceration" campaign. More than 500 students had an opportunity to walk through the prison cell and hear directly from our staff about the hard reality of prison confinement, and why is important for youth to finish their education and prepare for their future. Right now, too many of our young people are ending up in jail. We need to change the statistics. The event received media coverage by KION, Telemundo, the Santa Cruz Sentinel and the Register Pajaronian.
A group of Homeboy staff spent the weekend with our friends from up north, Barrios Unidos. They were all up at the Walter Guzman Healing Retreat Center with nature, tipis, tree houses, beautiful Redwoods and a sweat lodge surrounding them. "It was a blessing" wrote one of the people on the trip. We can't wait to welcome them back this week and hear of their adventures up in the Santa Cruz mountains.
